Abstract: Catherine Benson Wahlén will present two key findings from her research on the role of organizations, conservation professionals and local communities in shaping marine conservation processes and outcomes. First, she will describe how organizations and individuals construct conservation impact, using a case study of a large conservation organization operating at international, national and local levels. Second, she will explain how individual attitudes about the environment translate into conservation behavior, using a case study from Manus province, Papua New Guinea. She will also discuss future research directions, including on individual agency and organizational innovation in marine conservation.
Biography: Catherine Benson Wahlén’s work explores how governance and socio-economic factors influence how people govern, manage and use natural resources, with a specific focus on marine conservation. She has conducted research on the human dimensions of conservation in Cambodia, Kenya, Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, and Uganda. She is currently completing her PhD at the University of Michigan.
