From 2005 to 2022, the main node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies was headquartered at James Cook University in Townsville, Queensland (Australia)
Erika grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and attended Duke University in North Carolina, where she studied biology and art history. She studied abroad in Australia and Bermuda, where she developed her interest in coral reefs. Erika received her Masters of Applied Science from the University of Sydney under the supervision of Prof. Maria Byrne and completed her PhD at James Cook University under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Baird and Dr. Sally Keith. Her research was on how climate change will affect patterns of coral biogeography. Specifically, how temperature and life history influence latitudinal distribution of corals on the Great Barrier Reef and whether thermal tolerance of early life stages varies between thermally distinct regions. Currently Erika is the director of The Hydrous, a non-profit organization for ocean education.
