Cristian is a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies. He completed his PhD in Environmental Economics at the University of Wyoming, where he researched the topics of risk—modelling people’s attempts to eliminate worst-case scenarios—and conflict—using economic laboratory experiments to test the effect that polarization has on conflict. Cristian is interested in modeling and integrating human and natural systems (bio-economic analysis); developing mechanisms to increase the efficiency of coupled human-natural systems; and in incorporating psychological insights into economic and environmental analysis. His current research focuses on the use of economic field and laboratory experiments to understand how markets, and market structure, changes people’s preferences for environmental sustainability. Other ongoing research involves the strategic use of signaling and information avoidance, discrimination, and land conservation. Other research interests include climate change, resource management, sustainability, altruism and cooperation, market structures (industrial organization), and testing existent—and new—economic models through laboratory and field economic experiments.
