Makeely completed a bachelor of biomedical science and honours in environmental microbiology through the University of the Sunshine Coast. She is now completing a PhD in marine science under Prof Andrew Hoey and Prof Morgan Pratchett, researching how habitat degradation impacts fish assemblages through the modification of cues released by changing habitats. Makeely’s research is conducted primarily on Lizard Island in the northern Great Barrier Reef.
