Abstract: The global conservation community is comprised of a range of organisations, processes, and professionals. Given the diversity of these actors, and the complexity of the systems that conservationists work in, it can be difficult to undertake and communicate conservation science that has identifiable impact. During this seminar, John will reflect on lessons learned during his time working in diverse roles in the conservation community, how scientists can best engage with practitioners, and discuss the recently developed global strategy that WWF Oceans is using to bolster and support coastal community-led conservation.
Biography: John Tanzer is WWF’s Global Oceans Leader. He has been with WWF for the last 8+ years and has raised the profile of WWF’s marine work around the world. John also headed up WWF’s successful global ocean campaign, ‘Sustain our Seas’. His career has been defined by developing partnerships and includes over a decade as the Executive Director of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. John originally trained in the disciplines of geography and economics, completing an honours degree at James Cook University in 1980. Since that time, he has worked in a number of areas of natural resource management and policy particularly in the marine and coastal realms. He holds a master’s degree in environmental law from the Australian National University.
