Event

The status of coral taxonomy and the implications for biogeography, evolution, conservation, and management of coral reefs

When

29 Oct - 5 Nov 2022

location
Magnetic Island
Presenter
Andrew Baird (Organiser)

The aim of the proposed workshop is to summarise the changes in one comprehensive work, re-examine some of the previous work to test whether or not the findings remain valid and to establish a framework for when a robust taxonomy is necessary to a given research question and when it is not. Finally, we will outline a research programme to produce a robust taxonomy for Scleractinia within a period of 5-10 years.

Outputs:

  1. A high profile synthesis paper in Trends in Ecology and Evolution or Current Biology on the current taxonomic status of hermatypic scleractinians and the implications for science and management of coral reefs.
  2. A species-level nomenclature for the hermatypic Scleractinia of the World to be published in ZooKeys.
