Operationalizing an effective and equitable approach to 30 x 30

When

16-20 November 2022

location
Magnetic Island
Presenter
Patrick Smallhorn-West

The goal of this workshop series is to convene experts in the fields of conservation impact and blue justice. The overarching question we aim to address is: what practical guidance can be offered to ensure an effective and equitable realization of 30 x 30? The workshop series will include i) a one-day workshop in New York with key members of the Wildlife Conservation Society following the Marine division annual meeting, and ii) a 3-day workshop on Magnetic Island with participants from James Cook University and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies. The 3-day workshop will explore the benefits and challenges of MPAs and other area-based conservation tools, such as Other Effective Conservation Measures (a rapidly emerging policy tool; Gurney et al. 2021), as well as approaches to implementing these tools such as human-rights based approaches. The primary output will be the submission of a manuscript for publication in a high impact academic journal by the end of the year.
